Capital Energy requests permission to install four wind farms in Aragon with a combined total capacity of 504 megawatts

The Ministry for Ecological Transition has made public the applications for authorisation to execute these wind farms in Aragon, capable of producing more than 1.5 million megawatt hours of clean energy per year

Capital Energy, the Spanish energy company aiming to become the first 100% vertically integrated renewable energy operator on the Iberian Peninsula, has requested the Ministry for Ecological Transition’s authorisation to carry out four major wind farms in Aragon, which together would have a total capacity of 504 megawatts: Céfiro, with 192 MW; Paucali, with 114 MW; Arlo, with 102 MW; and Argestes, with 96 MW. These projects, which are awaiting approval from the Ministry, would involve an investment of 330 million euros by Capital Energy.

According to a press release published by Capital Energy on its own website, the Ministry for Ecological Transition has published the authorisation applications for these four wind farms, capable of producing more than 1.5 million MWh per year, enough to supply clean energy to around 630,000 homes in Aragon, and which would avoid almost 600,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions. Moreover, the company says that the construction of these four wind farms would create as many as 2,900 jobs when the building work reaches its peak, with 100 professionals being employed long-term to carry out operation and maintenance tasks.

With these four projects, the energy company seeks to increase its participation in wind farm development in Aragon, where it already has 1.5 GW of installed capacity spread across more than 10 projects. In recent months, Capital Energy has made progress in the processing of the wind farms Biota and Muno (in the Cinco Villas county of Saragossa province), Diana and Vientos del Sur (in the Campo de Borja county of Saragossa province) and Las Mareas I and II (in the Bajo Cinca county, halfway between the provinces of Huesca and Saragossa). These projects have a combined total capacity of 580 MW.

The four farms have the following characteristics:

  • Argestes wind farm. To be located in the municipalities of La Fresneda, Fórnoles, La Portellada and Ráfales, in the province of Teruel. Its evacuation infrastructure will be located in the Teruel municipalities of La Fresneda, Valjunquera, Valdeltormo and Mazaleón. Its construction will cost around 60 million euros, with sixteen 6 MW wind turbines providing a total of capacity of 96 MW. It will be able to produce more than 290,400 MWh per year, enough to cover the electricity supply of nearly 120,000 homes. Argestes will also cut annual CO2 emissions by around 110,000 tonnes.
  • Arlo wind farm: With an investment of nearly 62 million euros, Arlo will be built in the municipalities of Maella, in the province of Saragossa, and Valdealgorfa and Mazaleón, in the province of Teruel. The latter two towns will also house its evacuation infrastructure. It will have an installed capacity of 102 MW, distributed among seventeen 6 MW turbines, and will be capable of producing more than 295,600 MWh. It will be able to supply clean electricity to around 120,000 homes, preventing the emission of around 110,000 tonnes of CO2.
  • Paucali wind farm: Paucali will have nineteen 6 MW wind turbines for a combined installed capacity of 114 MW and will be able to supply more than 332,200 MWh per year, enough to meet the energy demand of around 135,000 homes. This wind farm, which will prevent the emission of around 130,000 tonnes of CO2 per year, will be located in Maella, and its evacuation infrastructure will be located in Maella and Mazaleón. Its development will require a total investment of more than 73 million euros.
  • Céfiro wind farm: With an investment of 135 million euros, Céfiro will be located in the municipalities of Mazaleón, Valdeltormo, Valjunquera, La Fresneda and Fórnoles and will share its evacuation infrastructure with the three aforementioned wind farms. It will be built in the municipalities of Mazaleón and Calaceite, in the province of Teruel; Maella, in the province of Saragossa; and Casares, Batea, Villalba dels Arcs, La Pobla de Massaluca, La Fatarella and Ascó, in the province of Tarragona. Its thirty-two 6 MW turbines will have a total capacity of 192 MW and will be able to generate more than 597,100 MWh per year, supplying clean electricity to almost 250,000 homes, while also reducing annual CO2 emissions by about 235,000 tonnes.
